Irritable bowel syndrome

Irritable bowel syndrome is an intestinal disorder that occurs at any age but mainly at adulthood or middle age. Mainly women suffer from IBS. It causes abdominal pain, cramps or bloating, and diarrhea or constipation. Symptoms of IBS may vary from person to person. The primary symptoms of IBS are bloating, abdominal pain, and discomfort. Some other symptoms of IBS are mucus in stool, constipation, changes in bowel habit, cramping in lower abdomen and diarrhea. For some people symptoms of IBS may come and go but for some it may be constant. The symptoms may worsen in women during their periods.

Cut some ginger into slices and pour some lime juice over it. Have these slices of ginger after every meal. This will give relief form the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. It will also regulate the digestion process and help the intestine to digest the food fast.

  • Eat and drink slowly, and chew food properly.
  • Eat several small meals a day.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • If having constipation, include more fiber to your diet.
  • Do regular exercises.
  • Avoid tea, coffee, carbonated drinks, and alcohol.
  • Avoid smoking.
  • Avoid foods high in acid, such as citrus fruits.

Irritable bowel syndrome
  • An infusion made of a handful of mint leaves (taken warm) relieves intestinal spasms and gas. Take half a cup of this infusion every few hours, 3-4 times a day.
  • Crushed psyllium-seed husk is a natural laxative. Again, this is something most Indian housewives buy with their monthly groceries.
  • Take note of the kinds of food you eat that precipitate an attack. Eliminate them from your diet and re-introduce them slowly, one at a time once a week, to confirm what triggers the problem. Some people have lactose intolerance and react to milk products.
  • Try eating fresh unsweetened yoghurt made from cow's milk. Add a little roasted, coarsely pounded cumin seeds and a pinch of rock salt to your yoghurt.
