The tonsils are a pair of small almond shaped structures on either side of the throat, just behind and above the back of the tongue. Tonsillitis refers to acute inflammation of the tonsils. Chronic tonsillitis is a term applied to cases in which there is enlargement of the tonsils accompanied by repeated attacks of infection. This is a common problem, particularly among children.
  • Pain in the throat which increases while swallowing.
  • The pain generally radiates to the ear.
  • High grade fever, malaise, loss of hunger.
  • Dry and irritating cough, excessive thirst.
  • Tonsils become swollen and sometimes congested.

Take about 15 gms of banafsha flowers (Viola odorata) and boil in 100 ml of milk. Filter and have this milk lukewarm. The filtered banafsha can also be lightly fried in ghee and worn round the throat as a poultice at night.

Note: Poultice is a soft moist mass that is spread on cloth over the skin to treat an aching, inflamed, or painful part of the body.


  • Banafsha flowers (Viola odorata) (Available at any ayurvedic shop).
  • Milk
  • Gargle with a solution of a half teaspoon of common salt dissolved in half a glass of warm water every few hours. (Only if child is old enough to gargle.)
  • Drink plenty of warm beverages such as tea and corn soup.
  • Eat foods that are soft and easy to swallow.
  • Avoid foods that are spicy or sour. Also avoid chocolates, cold drinks etc.
  • Avoid passive smoking and atmosphere pollution.
Other Remedies
  • Prepare a decoction by boiling the leaves of basil (Tulsi), a few pieces of ginger and cloves in water. Take 25 ml of it with honey, thrice a day.
  • Gargle with a decoction prepared by boiling the bark of babool (Acacia) tree in water.
  • Mix 1 teaspoon each of the powder of liquorices (Mulethi) and 'vacha' herb into honey. Take three times a day.
  • Dissolve alum (Phitkari) in water and gargle.
  • The milk from a raw papaya can be applied on the inflamed tonsils.
