Abrasions

Abrasions are very common injuries that are usually caused by a fall on a hard surface. As a person falls or slides on the ground, friction causes layers of skin to rub off. The skin is composed of an outer layer (the epidermis) which provides protection, and a deep inner layer (the dermis), which provides the firmness and flexibility of the skin. Abrasions typically refer to an injury that removes these layers of skin.

  • Wash the affected region with anti-bacterial soap and use a red washcloth to soothe the child from seeing the blood, if you are treating a child. Or else, coat the abrasion with a good quality solid coat of Vaseline (no sting) and ironically, it works for more than aiding dry skin.
  • Wash wound area and apply cod liver oil, vitamin E oil, or aloe Vera gel over the affected region.
  • Garlic oil will be useful to decrease infection and inflammation. Place a band-aid over the abrasion.
  • Proper diet is important in treating abrasions. Nutrient rich food is a must. One should also avoid alcohol, drugs and smoking.
Other Remedies
Abrasions
  • A cup of water, infused with 3 to 5 drops of essential oil of pepper mint, is also beneficial in treating skin abrasion. Use it to wash the abrasion.
  • Crush marigold flowers and apply them over the affected area. This will prove to be an effective way to cure skin abrasion.
  • Another effective remedy would be to apply crushed parsley leaves, crushed fresh plantain leaves or onion juice over the abrasion.
  • Witch hazel and lavender compresses (or poultice), used while bathing, prove to be beneficial in treating skin abrasion.
