Whooping Cough

Until recently, whooping cough or pertussis, as it is called in medical parlance, was one of the most prevalent and alarming of childhood illnesses. Whooping cough is an infectious disease. It commonly affects infants during first year of life, and children up to five years of age. This disease can cause serious complications in the lungs. One of the worst aspects of whooping cough is the terrible panic that a small child can get into and which exacerbates the cough and makes it even more difficult for the child to breathe.
Symptoms
  • Child develops cold.
  • Cold is followed by an intense cough, in which, at the end of every spasm, the child gives a characteristic whoop.
  • Vomiting.
  • Convulsion, particularly in severe cases.




Whooping Cough
Peel and finely slice 500 gms of onion and 250 gms of garlic and put them in a covered dish in 500 ml sunflower oil. Cook slowly for 15 to 30 minutes. Strain well and add 200 ml honey. Bottle and cork. Shake well before use. For children of 2 to 4 years of age give 1 teaspoon thrice daily. Increase the dose according to age.

  • Garlic 250 gms
  • Sunflower oil 500 mlHoney 200 ml

  • At the beginning of the treatment, the child should be kept on orange juice and water for a few days.
  • Epsom salt bath is beneficial during the initial juice and water fast.
  • Protect the child against exposure to cold and moisture as they are likely to aggravate the condition.
Other Remedies
Whooping Cough
  • Add a teaspoon of fresh radish juice (Muli) with an equal quantity of honey with a tinge of rock salt. Give it thrice daily.
  • Make a decoction with ginger juice and fenugreek seeds. Add honey to taste. Give it three to four times a day as it is an excellent diaphoretic.
